Keeping your original teeth in your head is usually the best outcome for any dental emergency. Getting a tooth pulled has a few different downsides, but if you absolutely need a tooth pulled, it can potentially save your life!

How Much Does Pulling A Tooth Cost?

A simple tooth pull (non-surgical) in Alberta, is generally priced up to $200 depending on your dentist. The Alberta dental guide has prices they recommend you follow. According to them, as much as 97% of Alberta dentists charge at or above their listed prices.

Smiles Dental Group always has prices below the guide so you know you’re getting the best value.

How Much Is Surgical Extraction?

Simple extractions are inexpensive, the dentist usually just uses tools to easily pull the tooth out (with some sedation). However, surgical extractions are much more complicated. Surgical extractions are over $200 and can be higher depending on the scenario.

Why Does A Tooth Need To Be Pulled?

Reasons for extraction:

Tooth Has Not Erupted

Teeth that have not broken through the gum line are more likely to cause future complications. If you notice any unusual pain or discomfort, talk with your dentist as soon as possible so we can take care of this for good!

Impacted Tooth

If a tooth is impacted, it cannot grow since the path to its root has been blocked by another oral structure or tissue. This can cause pain in your jaw and shifting of teeth positions due to conflict between them; eventually, this will lead to causing permanent damage for you!

The Root Is Blocking A Tooth

There are a variety of reasons why teeth might not be growing incorrectly, but one common cause is when the root becomes curved or slanted. This can prevent another tooth from coming into its proper position and needlessly causing pain for you!

Extreme Decay or Broken Tooth

Teeth that are in serious condition can no longer be restored. This may either have been due to trauma or decay and if it was because of the latter, you might have periodontitis on your hands!

Tooth Abscess

The bacteria in your mouth can get infected and cause problems for teeth. If the inner tooth becomes inflamed or swollen, it may need to be removed through procedures such as root canal therapy–a costly option if you lack insurance coverage that covers these costs!

No Or Bad Insurance Coverage

If you don’t have great insurance, it may be difficult to afford the more expensive procedures. This includes root canal therapy and crowns. If your policies aren’t up-to par with what’s available in today’s market then it could prevent us from the getting treatments our dental health requires because they just won’t cover those costs.

How Do I Prepare For A Tooth Pull?

The dentist will need to do a number of things before you can have your tooth or teeth pulled. Make sure that during this time, if anything else is happening such as medications being taken for medical conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes then let the dental team know about it so they are aware of your condition

Make sure that you tell the dentist of any medications, vitamins or supplements before they are given to ensure there will be no complications during treatment.

  • A congenital heart defect
  • Diabetes
  • Liver disease
  • Thyroid disease
  • Renal disease
  • Hypertension
  • An artificial joint
  • Damaged heart valves
  • Adrenal disease
  • An impaired immune system
  • History of bacterial endocarditis

If you have a bacterial infection, an antibiotic may be the perfect prescription. This medication can kill bacteria and treat or prevent infections from spreading through your body easily!

  • Surgery will take a long time
  • You have an infection or a weakened immune system
  • You have a specific medical condition

If they prescribe you any antibiotics, make sure you take them. Your mouth and immune system will be compromised while the extraction site is healing.

You will want to keep these tips in mind to make sure the extraction goes as smoothly as possible:

  • Wear a short-sleeve shirt if you’re receiving IV sedation.
  • Don’t smoke before the surgery.
  • Alert the dentist if you have any cold or illness.
  • If you are receiving any form of sedation, arrange a ride home.

What Are The Tooth Extraction Risks

Tooth extractions are, for the most part, safe procedures that come with few serious risks. However, like with any surgery, there are risks involved! One of the most common risks of tooth extraction is dry socket. This happens when the blood clot of extraction site is knocked loose.

Complications that can occur:

  • Bleeding that lasts longer than 12 hours
  • Severe fever and chills, signaling an infection
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Cough
  • Chest pain and shortness of breath
  • Swelling and redness at the surgical site

Pulling a tooth – Aftercare

It will take up to a week or more to fully heal from getting your tooth pulled:

  • Apply a cold compress to the side of your face that had the extraction. Do this for as long as you can, up to 10 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.
  • Once the tooth is pulled, the dentist will apply a piece of gauze to the extraction site.
  • Don’t use a straw or smoke for 24-72 hours after the tooth pull.
