So are you considering teeth alignment for you or your kid? If yes, then for sure, there must be hundreds of questions bursting in your head right now. So let us try to answer a few simple questions.

What Are Orthodontics?

The technique of straightening teeth with the help of an appliance is called orthodontics.

Who Needs Orthodontics?

Any adult or child with teeth that:

  • Have the wrong positioning
  • Have gaps in between
  • Are irregular
  • Are protruding
  • Are crooked

Who Needs Orthodontics?

The treatment includes putting brackets/wires on your teeth and regular visits for tightening/changing the wire.

How Long Will The Treatment Take?

The time of treatment depends on a number of factors:

  • Teeth stuck deep in the jaw
  • The inclusion of chin headgear/caps or any myofunctional appliance treatment before the braces
  • Type of bone/pace of movement of teeth
  • Regularity of visits
  • Age of patient
  • Seriousness of problem

Thus, treatment time can differ between 1-3 years. On average, it takes about 1-1.5 years or 16-18 months

How Long Will The Treatment Take?

Most of the treatment is virtually pain-free. However, for a few days after the braces are tightened; you may experience mild to moderate discomfort that can be treated easily with a pain killer.

When Is Toot/Teeth Extraction Is Required?

Teeth removal is required in patients where no space is available for the teeth to move. In some cases, this can be avoided by expanding the jaws but several times this is not possible. The space made by the teeth removal is filled during treatment by the movement of other teeth in the space. You won’t experience much pain during this. As compared to adults, healing in kids is very fast. In most cases, painkillers are not needed after one or two days.

Are Braces The Only Solution?

Not always. If you just want to get a tooth aligned then you can go for esthetic dentistry/smile designing with ceramics. If the problem is related to jaw malformations then it can be treated by surgery. Consulting your dentist is the best way to find out whether you are suitable for braces or not.

What Are The Different Types Of Braces?

Basically, there are two types of braces: metal and ceramic braces. The metal ones were really popular but only till the time ceramic braces made their appearance. The ceramic braces are tooth-colored. Thus, it is less obvious that you are getting your teeth aligned. The Invisalign braces are getting really popular today.
