Lip Bite – Treatment

The inside of your mouth usually heals pretty fast. You may have had burns or bites in the past that seemed bad, but also seemed to go away quicker than you expected. However, if you bit your lip and caused damage that is concerning to you, it may be a good idea to take some cautionary measures:

Clean And Dress The Wounded Area

You don’t want to give the bacteria a chance to infect the wound. So you will want to keep it clean, at least until it stops bleeding. To do this, you can either use mouthwash containing alcohol or use a warm saltwater rinse. For a saltwater rinse, mix a teaspoon of salt in 8 oz. of water and gently swish it around the area. Once the wound is cleaned, you will want to “dress” the wound. This simply means putting a small piece of gauze, a tissue, a washcloth, or any other soft absorbent fabric that you can comfortably fit between your lip and teeth. This will apply pressure to the wound and will help prevent bleeding as well as block infection.   If you aren’t able to dress the wound, you can just clean it more frequently to keep it clean. After the wound is done bleeding, you should apply a cold compress to your lip to keep the swelling down. A swollen lip can potentially be hazardous and you may end up biting it more.

Other DIY Pain Relief Tips

If you’re still feeling discomfort after the cold compress, there are a few other options you can do to relieve yourself of the pain:

  • Take over-the-counter (OTC) pain medication- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen, are evidence-backed drugs that can help deal with pain management.
  • Longer duration for cold compress – If the cold compress keeps the pain and discomfort down, then you can keep it applied for as long as you may need it.
  • Oral Anti-Septic Gel – You can get this at most drug stores, it will help stave off infection so the wound heals faster.

Note: Do not use Polysporin for cuts and wounds inside the mouth, it is not safe to digest.

Bitten Cheek Or Tongue

If you bite your cheek or your tongue, it will feel and react in a similar manner to when you bit your lip, and the treatments for this are largely the same. If your cheek gets damaged, you may want to make sure you do not have a broken tooth just to be safe.

Canker Sores

canker sore is a small uncomfortable bump inside your mouth. If you’re able to see it, it will be small and round, or oval, it may also be read and or white in appearance. Canker sores can develop on any part of your mouth, and they will usually be immediately noticeable.

It is not entirely understood why they appear, but can happen for the following reasons:

  • Mouth injuries, like biting the inside of your lip
  • Viral infection
  • Stress
  • Vitamin or mineral deficiency
  • Food allergy
  • Hormonal changes

The same treatments for a bit lip, can also be applied to a canker sore:

  • Saltwater Rinse
  • antiseptic mouth sore rinse
  • Cold Compress
  • NSAIDs for pain relief
  • Topical oral pain medication on the sore

When Is The Bite An Emergency?

In some rare cases, mostly from trauma, you may have bitten your lip bad enough that it could be considered an emergency! If any of these situations occur, you may want to get an emergency dentist appointment:

  • A deep or large wound
  • You bit all the way through the lip
  • Debris stuck in the wound
  • Pain that is worsening over time
  • Difficulty in opening or closing your mouth.

Biting your lip can be a fun experience, but it can also lead to serious medical problems. Make sure to follow the guidelines listed in this blog to avoid any unwanted consequences. Clean and treat the lip injury as advised, and take precautions to prevent biting mouth injuries in the future. We hope you found this blog helpful!
